<Desc>During the period 7/1/2025-6/30/2026, we gave tours to 23 school groups with a total of over 700 students/teachers/chaperones. We were also visited by 8 other tour groups with a total of over 190 visitors. In addition to these groups, we registered over 1100 other visitors from all over the world. International guests came from Mexico, Germany, Hungary, Austria, China, Scotland, Britain, Canada, and France. 41 states across the U.S. were represented in our visitor count. In New Mexico, the bulk of our guests came from Bernalillo County, but we also saw travelers from 13 other counties: San Juan, Taos, Colfax, Los Alamos, Sandoval, Santa Fe, Cibola, Valencia, Socorro, Sierra, Grant, Doa Ana, and Otero.Exhibit openingsAmerican Dream, American Nightmare-researched, developed, and designed by high school students at New America Charter School as part of NMHIMs student exhibit design program, this exhibit takes a close look at Japanese and Japanese-American incarceration in New Mexico. While many are aware that hundreds of thousands of Japanese and Japanese-American people (many of whom were U.S. citizens) were interned in camps during World War II, few know three such camps existed here in New Mexico. This exhibit opened in the museum to the public on December 18, 2025. Evidence of Life: Revived Through the Archives-curated by students from the UNM Honors College, this exhibit examines personal stories and experiences of people who lived during the Holocaust. The exhibit uses primary source materials from the Yavneh Klos and NMHIM collections. This exhibit is curated, researched, designed and developed by students of the class and was first displayed at Congregation Alberts annual Yom HaShoah service on April 13, 2026. The service was attended by around forty participants. The exhibit was subsequently installed in the museum on May 9, 2026 where close to thirty visitors attended the opening reception. Removal & Resilience-focuses on the displacement and forced removal of Indigenous tribes in the United States and New Mexico. This exhibit was created as part of NMHIMs student exhibit design program. Students at Technology Leadership High School worked with museum staff to develop this insightful exhibit about The Trail of Tears and The Long Walk and how Indigenous communities demonstrated great resistance and resilience amidst devastating forced removals. This exhibit opened in the museum to the public on May 2, 2026.Other programs June 14- Author talk by Jane Ziegelman, director of the culinary program at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum in NYC. She spoke about her most recent book, Once There Was a Town: The Memory Books of a Lost Jewish World. Through the lens of Yizkor Books, memorials to specific destroyed Jewish towns and communities written by their survivors, Ziegelman explores the rich cultural, religious, and social history of Eastern European Jewish life before the Holocaust. The event was held at the New Mexico Veterans Memorial and was attended by approximately 26 people. On June 20, 2026, NMHIM hosted our first Holocaust survivor and survivor descendant get-together. This informal gathering offered community members an opportunity to connect with others of a similar background. The event attracted close to a dozen survivors and descendants and set the stage for ongoing survivor focused events. Legislative Visits August 13 2025- Dahveed Torres-Avila (Heinrich field rep) October 7 2025- Rep Garratt and Lien-Shin Wang OffermannFebruary 18 2026- Melanie Stansbury visit Professional DevelopmentsAugust 16 2025- From Routes to Roots. This PD provided teachers with both historical context and practical tools to help students understand the significance of immigration in shaping our countrys past and present. Staff presented an overview of immigration history from the 17th century through to the 21st, with an emphasis on how new restrictive immigration laws prevented Jewish refugees from fleeing Germany and Austria in the leadup to the Holocaust. Designed primarily for U.S and World History educators, the workshop also introduced participants to effective museum education strategies and approaches. This PD was attended by 40 teachers from Albuquerque, Farmington, Corrales, Silver City, Lordsburg, Rio Rancho, and Tijeras. February 28 2026- Diverse Approaches to Teaching the Holocaust. This one-day professional development conference, intended for grade 6-12 educators, explored some of the many possible approaches to teaching the Holocaust. The PD featured a keynote talk by historian and teacher Sarah Welsh on the experiences of the Roma/Sinti community during the Holocaust. Teachers rotated through three workshops. Kristen Hallahan from the Institute for Curriculum Services, a nonprofit specializing in providing free materials about Jewish history and Judaism, led a workshop on using primary sources in the classroom. Jake Newsome provided teaching materials from his organization, the Pink Triangle Legacies Project, a grassroots initiative that honors the memory of the Nazis' queer and trans victims and carries on their legacy. NMHIM staff led a workshop on using museum exhibit design to teach history. At the end of the day, local Holocaust survivor Andy Holten spoke about his time as a hidden Jewish child in the Netherlands. This PD was attended by 50 teachers from Albuquerque, Beln, Pea Blanca, Los Lunas, and Rio Rancho.
