The draft budget is presented to the Finance Committee for review, and they present the budget to the board for approval. Compensation is discussed by the Finance Committee, incorporated into the budget, and approved by the board. The documentation is the final decision by the Board as recorded int he minutes. Part VI, Line 19 The organization will provide documents upon request In December 2023, we were informed by our long-term accountant that they were downsizing their accounts to focus on larger clients. As a result, they told us that they would no longer be able to assist with our accounting needs. Although we initiated a process of searching for a new accountant, this process was interrupted in June 2024, when we underwent our biannual change of executive committee members, which included the treasurer. The new treasurer was a new member of the Board and had no prior experience with the financial operations of our organization. She therefore took some time to get up to speed on our operations. However, due to personal conflicts, our new treasurer resigned from this position in December 2024. This unexpected event has required me, a volunteer inexperienced with filing 990s myself, to step into the gap and oversee our financial operations, including the search for a new accountant. Regrettably, in the process, we neglected to file for an extension and overlooked the deadline for our annual 990 submission. This was a simple matter due to a clerical error on our part, and we apologize for the mistake. We hope that the IRS will understand this situation was an isolated instance and consider a reduction or waiver of penalties related to this issue. We would also like to note that the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington is primarily a volunteer-based organization. Our three staff members, including our executive director, are all contractors. We have no paid officers and no paid board of directors. They are volunteers who generously give their time to support our organization, despite numerous personal and professional demands. In addition, the majority of our funding comes from local religious congregations, which also generously support our mission of promoting interreligious dialogue, understanding, and harmony through the charitable funds contributed by their members to their missions. Any penalties assessed against our organization will be deducted directly from these and other funds used to support our mission. As evident from the organization's small size, such a penalty would have a significant impact on its ability to fund our operations. In addition, we would also request that you consider the prior filing history of the organization. We have a history of filing our tax returns on time. Therefore, we believe that this provides strong evidence that it attempts to file its tax returns on time and will continue to do so. Finally, as Assistant Treasurer, I will ensure that any future extensions that need to be filed are handled appropriately. Therefore, the organization will have a system in place to make sure that any future tax returns are filed on a timely basis.
