The Organization's collection consists of 39 rare 19th century maps of the United States. The 19th century in America defined the US in fundamental ways: The continental boundaries were established, Civil War bloodied the land, slavery was abolished, native people faced genocide, and the notion of manifest destiny guided policy and politics. This collection of 39 rare maps from the era help us to understand in a very physical way both the zeitgeist and outcomes of this pivotal century especially as it applies to natural history. We intend to use the maps in a variety of ways: Host an exhibition that features historically important prints from the era alongside the maps, use the maps as a centerpiece for field programs focused on mapping, and to use the maps in fundraising efforts.
