We come together in commitment to racial equity and to advocate for the rights of people of color. false false 167385 0 0 The Racial Justice Coalition of Asheville (RJC) began as a coalition of non-profit social justice organizations primarily focused on racism in policing after several tragic incidents in our community. As time went on and our capacity grew, we have shifted more towards public advocacy and education as part of the Reparations movement. The City of Asheville and Buncombe County jointly established a Reparations Commission. To ensure that the Commission considered the views of those most impacted, the RJC undertook a comprehensive, professionally conducted survey of the Black community in Asheville and Buncombe County in 2023. In December 2023, a lengthy report entitled Every Black Voice was published and distributed both to governmental leaders and in the community at large. It is the first undertaking of its kind in our community. The RJC has also sought to educate the community about what the Reparations movement entails. In the relevant fiscal year, RJC staff conducted regular Lunch and Learn sessions at which attendees were provided with lunch and a lecture and discussion about one of the five Impact Focus Areas identified by the Reparations Commission (Housing, Education, Economic Development, Criminal Justice, and Health and Wellness). The sessions were very well attended, with experts in each area addressing the attendees and taking their questions. In addition, the staff conducted Barbershop Sessions, in which staff held informational sessions at various Black- owned barbershops and beauty parlors around the city. Our Coalition Supporters (the nonprofit social justice organizations mentioned above) met regularly via Zoom in the fiscal year to receive updates about RJC activities, to exchange ideas about actions undertaken by their respective organizations, and to offer input to the RJC board and staff.
