HIGH SCHOOL SAILING PROGRAM SUPPORT. The summer camps teach 80 to 100 students to sail over week long camps. They are taught sailing theory, boat rigging, knots, practical sailing skills, and capsize recovery. The camps are taught by certified sailing instructors along with junior instructors, many of whom learned to sail through the OHYS programs. Junior Instructors are typically 14-18 year olds who wish to become sailing instructors that have not yet gotten their US Sailing Level One Certification. By volunteering they get valuable on the job experience and their volunteer hours count towards certification courses paid for by the program. Many of these Junior Instructors become certified and work for OHYS or other similar programs. OHYS puts an emphasis on continuing a cycle from learning to sail, becoming proficient, then becoming instructors who then in turn develop future sailors in the program. The team participates in NWISA district competitions in Washington and Oregon. Team members practice multiple times a week practicing drills and races in the waters of Oak Harbor Bay.
