Our flagship EarthLab Climate Action Center, developed on previously vacant land at Millennial Tech Middle School, has educated thousands of students and families about environmental science and climate resilience. EducationThe Groundwork EarthLab Educators deliver place-based learning experiences and projects during the school day to over 2000 K-12 youth of the San Diego Unified School Districts Lincoln Cluster of Schools. EarthLab Educators connect real-world challenges that Groundwork tackles within the Chollas Creek Watershed with learning standards to empower students to focus on their studies and leverage their knowledge to affect change in their communities. Climate-safe NeighborhoodsThe Chollas Creek Watershed exemplifies compounded impacts of historic environmental injustice. 1930s creek channelization began a pattern of infrastructure decisions that overlooked community wellbeing. 1950s freeway construction further divided neighborhoods, displacing hundreds of families and businesses, particularly BIPOC residents who had rare opportunities for property ownership in Southeastern San Diego. Today, 80+% of residents are BIPOC, and CalEnviroScreen places census tracts in the 90th-98th percentiles for environmental burdens. Unlike more affluent neighborhoods, this area lacks adequate green infrastructure to absorb stormwater and provide shade.
