The Company typically gives over 100 performances at the Citizens Bank Opera House in Boston, MA during its eight-month season that ends in June of each year. The Adult Dance Program offers classes and workshops to students of all abilities and experience levels. The BBS Professional Division at Walnut Hill School for the Arts is an audition-only, highly competitive program that provides rigorous training to prepare students for a professional career. The Summer Dance Program is a 5-week summer intensive training opportunity for students globally. Lastly, BBS operates a handful of programs intended to introduce a love of dance to the broader Boston community. Citydance, established in 1991, provides tuition-free dance programming to over 3,000 Boston Public School third grade students. Adaptive Dance, established in 2002, provides creative movement instruction to individuals with disabilities. And BBS instructors provide training workshops to organizations locally and nationwide. Virginia Williams Fund (the "Fund") held in trust and managed by The Boston Foundation. The Fund was established in the early 1980s for the exclusive benefit of the Ballet on the condition the Ballet continues to operate as a 501(c)(3) ballet company. The Fund had a fair market value of $2,568,254.96 at June 30, 2025. Schedule D, Part V, Line 4 The Ballet's Endowment consists of over forty individual funds established to support artistic productions, scholarships to the Boston Ballet School, and community programmatic activities. Schedule D, Part X, Line 2 The Ballet is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as an organization described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (the "Code") and is generally exempt from federal and state income taxes on related income. Accordingly, no provision for income taxes is made in the financial statements. The Ballet accounts for the effect of any uncertain tax positions based on a "more likely than not" threshold to the recognition of the tax positions being sustained based on the technical merits of the position under scrutiny by the applicable taxing authority. If a tax position or positions are deemed to result in uncertainties of those positions, the unrecognized tax benefit is estimated based on a "cumulative probability assessment" that aggregates the estimated tax liability for all uncertain tax positions. The Ballet has identified its tax status as a tax-exempt entity as a tax position; however, the Ballet has determined that such tax position does not result in an uncertainty requiring recognition. The Ballet is not currently under examination by any taxing jurisdiction. Its federal and state income tax returns are generally open for examination for three years after the date of filing the related return. Terms of the employment agreements include annual compensation amounts.
