<Desc>The Walnut Cove Members Association (WCMA) consists of the Cliffs at Walnut Cove property owners who are interested in supporting local nonprofit charities and join the organization through annual tax-deductible membership dues. The WCMA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that raises money through annual dues, other member and corporate donations, and the annual "Weekend of Giving" which traditionally includes a golf tournament and other fundraising events. At the end of each year, these funds are distributed to a variety of local charitable organizations based on recommendations submitted by the grant committee to the board of directors. Any WCMA member actively involved in a charity which meets the stated guidelines is encouraged to submit a grant request. The WCMA is made up entirely of unpaid volunteers committed to making sure all available funds go directly to reputable local charities while incurring minimal overhead and administrative expense. Historically 98% of all net fundraising revenue has gone directly to charity. Membership in the WCMA serves a dual purpose. Not only is the organization helping those in need within the Western North Carolina community, but we are also supporting friends and neighbors who are committed to volunteering for worthwhile causes. Since its 2007 inception, the WCMA has awarded more than 440 grants, totaling over $4,100,000 to a diverse range of nonprofits in Western North Carolin. WCMA began with just 56 members but of the past few years has grown to mor that 450 members, many of whom are active volunteers. WCMA's service to the community, along with its generous donations, has made Walnut Cove a valued and respected part of the Western North Carolina region.</Desc>

<ExplanationTxt>ABCCM - $25,000. As part of the charity's Transformation Village (TrV) that provides transitional housing, food, clothing, medicine, counseling and more for homeless women, mothers with children, and Women Veterans the grant will go toward operational expenses for the new 36 bed Safe Haven, opened in November 2024. Safe Haven is a year-round, 24/7, emergency shelter, that can also accept entire family units. This will increase from 25 beds, only available overnight during the winter months, called Code Purple when temps are below 32 degrees. Sponsor - Nancy Fredin Advent Health - $10,000. WCMA grant funds would be used to support the purchase of four Tocodynamometry (TOCO's) for its neonatal care unit. TOCOs monitor uterine contractions during labor. This is part of a larger project to enhance neonatal care services within the hospital. Approximately 62% of the mothers served by AHH live at or below the poverty line and many lack insurance. The goal of establishing a Neonatal Acute Care Unit at AHH is to increase the number of Labor and Delivery services, including acute care cases and reduce the number of patient transfers to distant hospitals by 20% by ensuring that more families receive care locally. Sponsor: Pete Champagne Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP) - $25,000. ASAP's grant will help fund their Double SNAP for Fruits and Vegetables Program (Double SNAP). Double SNAP improves access to fresh food and supports the local economy of farmers. It invites SNAP recipients into farmers market spaces, creating opportunities for more residents to shop from and connect with farmers. The Double SNAP program allows participants to purchase fruits and vegetables from the local farmers; for every dollar they spend at the market, they receive another dollar that they can use to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables only. Sponsor: Robert Turner Avery Creek Elementary School - Thru Eblen Charities - $17,011.87. Avery Creek Elementary School, is requesting a grant to help fund the purchase of 4 new Smart Projection Screens for use in the classrooms of second grade students. These classrooms are the only classrooms without these screens that allow the teachers to fully implement the curriculum that is often provided with digital assets that require the screens for classroom instruction. ACES is a K-4 elementary school that has approximately 532 students of which 68.4% are considered economically disadvantaged and 58% are minorities. Reading and Math scores at or above proficient level are 38% and 33% which is significantly lower than the norm in Buncombe County Schools which are 46% and 40%. Sponsor: Jane Maxwell AVL Art Museum - $5,000. This grant will assist summer campers to the Art Museum, internship stipends, Learning and Engagement school tour guides and art based programs will be brought to local libraries to engage children and young adults in the arts. Sponsor: Julia Peterson AVL Chamber Music Series - $2,500. Grant will expose Middle and High School students to chamber music through classroom visits by musicians and attendance at live performances. Sponsor: Jan Dockendorf AVL Humane Society - $12,000. Grant funds will support the veterinary assistance program ($125,000 annual budget) under the Asheville Humane Society's (AHS) Community Solutions department. The veterinary assistance program provides medical care, exams, labs and meds to pets that have urgent needs which the owners cannot afford. Typically, their clients are seniors, victims of domestic violence, homeless or housing insecure, residents of the numerous housing authority complexes, veterans and others with financial crises. The assistance is provided as a voucher to be used to pay for veterinary care and other safety net services so that these animals can stay in their current human housing situation instead of being surrendered due to medical expenses. What has been preserved is a relationship between a pet and the owner, who may have no other more precious relationship in their life than the one with their pet. Sponsor: Elaine McGuire AVL Poverty Initiative - $25,000. Funds will support rent, utilities, insurance and supplies for API, which is providing food two days a week. They operate out of a very old facility on Haywood Road in West Asheville. On Mondays and Thursdays they serve a sit down meal for neighbors. Food is donated and warmed. Both inside and outside tables are available. People sit at round tables, a volunteer takes their order that is chosen from a large white board that is updated frequently reflecting available food, and returns with a meal on china plates. The tables are large and seat 6/8. Food is donated to API from a variety of sources including Whole Foods and local restaurants and bakeries. Sponsor: Clem Stone AVL Symphony Society - $2,500. Grant funds will support the Asheville YPC program during the 2025 academic school year. The Asheville YPC (formerly Children's Concerts) was established in 1990. The program experienced a hiatus during the late 2010's and was restarted in 2024. The YPC provides a symphonic musical experience to Asheville City and Buncombe County fifth grade students, and the YPC introduces fifth grade students to the world of classical music the year before they have an opportunity to join a band or orchestra in middle school. Program expenses are primarily orchestra fees, conductor fees and orchestra travel. Sponsor: Susan Harrington Butts Big Brothers Big Sisters - $17,011.87. BBBSWNC serves at-risk youth in low-income communities. Funding is sought for Big Futures, a relatively new program that specifically targets HS BIG's. The mission is to better prepare these students for next steps. The grant would provide for administrative support and resource packages for monthly training encompassing the development of Youth Development Plans (YDP'S), life skills, educational topics in conjunction with LITTLES and college/tech/trade school analysis and preparation. Sponsor: Michael Calogero Boys & Girls Club of Henderson Cty - $17,011.87. This grant helps support the BGCHC program with transportation and food services. The Club provides after school and summer services at no cost to the families. 99% of the families earn 80% or less than the median household income for this county and 90% of the parents report that the Club services help them keep their jobs in the community. Sponsor: Dianeice Eldridge Bounty & Soul - $25,000. Bounty & Soul is a non-profit organization that distributes food via a mobile market from farmers and local donations to individuals with food insecurity. They particularly cover the Black Mountain, East Asheville and Swannanoa River areas. Recipients receive free fruits and vegetables based on need - not finances. In addition, they provide cooking classes, nutritional information, and childrens' activities at their markets. Bounty & Soul purchases produce and vegetables from local farms plus receives donations of food that are misshapen and/or imperfect from retailers. Grant funds requested will allow the addition of 3 new mobile sites/stops for 2025 in Buncombe County. With the increased number of stops, more food for the mobile market will need to be purchased to cover the increased reach of their programs. In addition, supplemental resources will be necessary to cover this expansion, including personnel, equipment, supplies and transportation costs. Sponsor: Donna Bailey Bridges Reading Program - $6,940.66. The Bridges Reading Enrichment Program (BREP) promotes greater literacy for first thru third graders at Estes Elementary School that have been identified by their teachers as non readers or readers needing assistance to attain grade level reading skills. This grant would support the purchase of Grades 1& 2 Geodes Wit and Wisdom decodable books as well as several STEM kits for them to have functional activities at the child's reading level as it increases. The decodable books will continue to support the framework and provide additional scaffolding for literacy that is taught in school. Sponsor: Sandi Heckman Calvary Episcopal Church Food Pantry - $25,000. Calvary Episcopal Church Food Pantry is considered a large local food pantry based upon MANNA criteria. Grant funds will go primarily towards the projected need of $165k of purchased goods which supplements $329k of In-kind donated goods. There is also a projected need of $7k of garden expenses, as the garden is used to grow fresh vegetables for distribution in the pantry. The goal of the pantry is to provide about a half week's provisions (11 meals per individual) per weekly visit using a grocery store type experience to reduce wasted food. The food provided is healthy (fruits, vegetables, milk, protein) and in many cases the major source of nutritious meals for the families. Sponsor: Jeff Faistenhammer</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>Catholic Charities - $5,000. The grant is simple and specific to burial/cremation assistance that is part of an overall effort to strengthen families, build communities, and reduce poverty. Burial expenses can be an urgent short-term need that overstrains the financial capacity of struggling families. CCDOC WRO assisted with 93 burials in western North Carolina in 2023. This grant would add about 30% more capacity for this program to serve those in need and increase the number of dignified burials provided from around 90 to over 120 families. The conservatively estimated direct impact of one individual laid to rest is that individual plus at least three related individuals. For 120 individual burials at least 400 individuals would be served. Sponsor: Dave Schoenholz Charlie's Angels Animal Rescue - $10,000. The grant will support two programs run by Charlie's Angles, an all volunteer organization. For 2025, Charlie's Angels is looking for support for two different programs 1) to partially fund spay and neutering services of individuals who are financially unable to pay for such services. The funding uses contracted veterinarians who have agreed to complete the services at a reduced fee. Payment is made to the vet who performed the services. 2) to assist financially needy individuals who cannot afford to pay for emergency/urgent vet services for their animals so that animals can remain in the household rather than being surrendered to a shelter. Payments for this second project are also made to the veterinarians. For both programs pet owners are referred to other funding sources to assist with medical payments or are required to fund the balance of the fee. Sponsor: Paula Mature Church of Advocate (Red Door) - $25,000. Before Helene about 115 individuals (the majority of which are homeless) were showing up for Sunday service and a hot lunch which is the first meal of the day offered Sundays in Downtown Asheville. Afterwards, individuals can visit the shoe room for shoes and the toiletries room for a variety of personal care items. Volunteers in these rooms help with the selection of shoes and personal care items. Recently Buncombe County assigned two medics and a nurse on Sundays to attend to minor injuries and to direct individuals to more critical care if needed. Red Door has gone from serving about 50 to about 115. The impetus is the Haywood Ministries, located just down the street, discontinued a long standing Sunday breakfast service. As a result, CA has had a large increase in is clientele. Sponsor: Bill Dockendorf Council on Aging of BC - $10,000. Council on Aging of Buncombe County (COAbc) is a 60-year-old organization that is a gateway to connect seniors to the federal, state and local resources that are designed to help meet the increasing needs of the aging. This grant will help close three specific gaps. Resource Coordination following up with the client to see how they are doing after the initial intake call. Home Modifications - A part time resource plus supplies to increase the home safety installations from 25 to 50. Volunteer Coordination manage the overall volunteer resources. Sponsor: Michael Calogero Eblen Charities - $25,000. Clothing vouchers redeemable at Goodwill locations will benefit approximately 800 needy school children identified by school personnel and administered through Eblen Charities. The vouchers are usable for shoes and clothing by the children. Since its inception in 2010 more than 29,000 children have been provided with vouchers for shoes and clothes. Sponsor: Susan Ableidinger FlatRock Playhouse - $5,000. The grant will allow Flat Rock Playhouse to hire of an Education Assistant to bolster the continued growth of their "juniors" programs. Funding will also be used to hire additional teachers and pay for supplies needed to administer the classes. The Playhouse anticipates direct impact with approximately 10,000 students; K-12 over 4 WNC counties (Henderson, Polk, Rutherford and Transylvania). Those students at Title 1 schools, identified as most in need will attend at no cost to the student or school. These activities include classes, camps, in-school musical theater and acting classes. Sponsor: Connie Bergman Food Connection - $25,000. Food Connection is seeking funding for its "Beyond the Busline" (BTBL) Program which focuses on meeting the needs of individuals and families who live and work outside the city limits of Asheville, where grocery stores are often sparse, and food pantries struggle to keep up with the growing need. They see folks from all walks of life at their BTBL distribution stops; seniors living on fixed incomes, working families having difficulty making ends meet, individuals living without stable permanent housing, families facing transportation barriers and concerned community members picking up meals for neighbors who are home-bound. They seek to expand this BTBL program to other locations around Buncombe County with WCMA funding. Sponsor: Michael Schreder Four Seasons Hospice - $20,000. This grant will support the Riversong Pediatric Palliative and Hospice Care program that was launched last year and partially funded by WCMA. Since its inception (Riversong), has cared for more than 40 seriously and terminally ill infants and children with multiple and varying needs requiring specially tailored equipment to manage symptoms and treat conditions. Some of these would include monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, feeding tubes, wheelchairs and hospital beds. These aids often allow the child to remain in the comfort of their homes while receiving palliative and hospice care. Sponsor: Colette Rodbell Helping At-Risk Kids (HARK) (formerly Guardian Ad Litem) - $20,000. The HARK program works through Dept Social Services (DSS) in concert with Guardians ad litem (GAL) to serve protected children. At-risk children will have needs identified by their GAL that cannot be covered by DSS. Necessities such as clothing, school supplies, tutoring and home repairs as well as enrichment activities (sense of normalcy), such as summer camps, field trips, and driver's ed are anticipated. This grant would fund 2 programs run by HARK: Summer camp experiences for at-risk kids, for direct summer camp fees that can be for YMCA overnight or day camps, sports camps or disability-oriented experiences and parttime administrator to manage this complex, data intensive program; Urgent transportation and temporary shelter needs of homeless children. Assistance typically takes the form of Ingles gift cards, bus passes, car repairs and vouchers for short-term, reduced-price hotel/motel stays. Sponsor: James Mathews Haywood Street Congregation - $25,000. Grant provides food and supplies for its HSC's Downtown Welcome Table and its Respite Program. The Haywood Street Congregation operates a community facility north of Patton Avenue where it enters the west side of downtown Asheville. The location is central to the needs of Asheville's under-housed and un-housed population. The HSC hosts multiple programs during the week, but their signature event is the Downtown Welcome Table (DWT) on Wednesdays where they serve 600 700 meals to anyone who wants to dine. Another significant function is the Haywood Street Respite (HSR). This facility receives and houses about 12 people at a time who are un-housed and have a significant health event. Many of the residents come from Mission Hospital after their discharge. A typical example is a homeless person who is released with an amputation. The HSR looks after them and feeds them through their recovery. HSC expects to serve approximately 67,000 meals this year. Sponsor: Glenn Simpson/MattAguiar. Helpmate, Inc. - $25,000. Helpmate works within our community to eliminate abuse and fear by providing safety, shelter, and support for victims/survivors of intimate partner domestic violence. Helpmate has provided these services to domestic violence survivors for 46 years. Their services include a 24/7 hotline, danger assessment, safety planning, shelter, court advocacy, therapy, child & family advocacy, outreach and case management. Funds are requested from WCMA to underwrite costs for case management services in Helpmate's emergency shelter for domestic violence survivors. WCMA funding would provide about 46% of one case manager's salary, they currently have 9 case managers. Simply put, they shelter those who are most likely to die without help; 91% of residents in Helpmate's shelter are at extreme risk of being killed by their partners. Helpmate is extremely underfunded for shelter space and services and can only take in those who are most likely to be killed by their intimate partner. MemoryCare is seeking funding for staff salaries for its care management team and education/admin staff. Sponsor: Sierra Paturalski NC Arboretum - $15,000. The NC Arboretum is requesting funds to redesign, expand, and implement this 8th grade program for BC's Title 1 schools. Because of new 8th grade curriculum guidelines, the Freshwater Ecology program is out of date, and they cannot currently offer it to meet existing requirements. The revised program will include a valuable, fun and hands-on outdoor experience to learn ways in which the students themselves can impact freshwater ecosystems. They will learn about water testing, identify macroinvertebrates, and explore up to two different types of freshwater ecosystems, a stream (Bent Creek) and/or a pond (Willow Pond). Our local waterways are challenged by urban stormwater pollution, agricultural runoff, erosion, road salt, human and animal waste, industrial effluent, and trash. Funds will provide programming and equipment that will reap rewards beyond 2025. NC Arboretum has a long established history of providing STEM opportunities to youth who will be faced with decision making in their futures. Sponsor: Jim Floyd Organic Growers School - $2,500. RiverLink seeks funding for two educational programs for school aged children, an in-school program and an after-school program. Their programs offer education about our water resources and how to appreciate and maintain them. The grant will provide environmentally oriented educational programming focused on K-8 students with a particular sub-goal of growing the engagement of Title 1 schools that generally have significant low income and BIPOC populations. The specific goal of the proposed project is to grow a next generation of river stewards through education - executed through: RiverRATS program of in-classroom and in-field experiential learning programs for grades K-8 during the school year; and Weeklong summer camps (RiverCamp) for grades 3-8 to provide hands-on exploration of water systems through scientific and recreational interactions with the river and the riparian environment. Sponsor: Woody Orris St. Vincent DePaul Society - $25,000. Grant supports funds for purchasing food for the pantry items and funds to provide critical financial assistance (for utilities) for families who are in serious need. The pantry provides food for about 90 families per week. Food that is donated as well as purchased from MANNA and other sources is organized in boxes inside the facility. Individuals drive up and a volunteer takes information such as name, SS#, family size dietary restrictions and the like. The volunteer goes inside and retrieves the number of boxes based on family size and returns to the car and helps load the boxes. In addition, SVDPS also provides financial assistance for about 70 individuals a year who are facing utility shut off. SDVPS is able to see the overall balance due, payment history, verify if and when there is a shut off date and the amount due to avoid shut off. If approved, payment is sent directly to the utility company. Individuals are allowed one relief payment a year. With WCMA funding, SVDPS expects to provide assistance to 45 families in 2025.
