This was a VAACC hosted seven-part series where renowned artist shared their expertise from concept to completion in their chosen medium through conversation, demonstration and performance. This year, the series kicked off in March, during Women's History Month, with a virtual, yet interactive event with award winning African Storyteller, Playwright, and Producer, Valerie Davis. Ms. Davis uses her talents to teach, African and African American History and to promote awareness of lesser-known historical events and people. The event featured a moderated interview and discussion with the artist reflecting on her career and artistry, as well as a special in-character conversation with Martha Ann Fields, an enslaved woman who escaped slavery in 1863. This specific performance included students from the Virginia Beach Public Schools Diversity Council which gave the performance an inter-generational flair. Series II continued with artist interviews and events in select months through November. Part III Line 4b Healthcare and Nutrition Disparities - VAACC partnered with Faith-Basd Organizations to address health care and nutrition disparities over a six-month program. Through support from a Sentara Cares Grant, VAACC partnered primarily with The Mount Church in Virginia Beach, as its sub-grantee, to offer events in healthcare education, nutrition, financial, and CPR classes in the community. Coupled with Sentara's Mobile Unit, their in-house, drive-up pantry, and 757 Mobile Market, hundreds of residents received free doctor visits, screenings, and healthly foof choices in their local neighborhoods. Part III Line 4c Virginia Tourism Grant Projects - The VAACC was awarded a grant through its ARPA funds for a period of three years. The purpose is to plan and develop historical and cultural content to share and expand knowledge and accomplishments about African Americans in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Five projects initially funded in 2022 continued into their second phases. A new project to expand our programmatic reach across the Hampton Roads region was initiated in partnership with the City of Franklin and Amun Ra Inc. to participate in thir Juneteenth festival and events. This included a bus tour of the historic home of revolutionary Natt Turner to learn about his courageous deed as told by actual members of his family. Part III Line 4d Other program services - The VAACC Community Fall Festival is held annually to bring the community together, give opportunity for our local shop/art vendors to display their wares, use local food vendors, and to provide local entertainment.
