We are connecting people to resources to achieve these goals. During 2023 SWEET Alabama hosted our second annual Green Economies Youth Fellowship, where we trained youth between the ages of 18-24 how to retrofit homes, organize their neighbors, and expand their understanding of housing and environmental justice. The Fellows retrofitted homes of their neighbors, developed training materials for distribution, hosted community pop-up events to distribute resources, and canvassed door-to-door. SWEET Alabama also worked in North Birmingham alongside our partner organizers to implement a comprehensive "Compensation and Relocation Survey" of residents in the EPA 35th Ave Superfund site, receiving over 200 responses. This includes encouraging residents to attend and speak during the city's annual Budget Public Hearing. In 2023, at the Birmingham City Budget hearing, many of our organizers or staff spoke and asked the city council to pass a budget that prioritizes everyday people. PBB did not advocate for the passage of any specific policy, but through encouraging increased civic engagement, and advocating that the local elected officials should vote in alignment with the needs residents are requesting for. PBB is only engaged in any grassroots lobbying as a small portion of their work, and only during the City of Birmingham's municipal budget season.
