Purchases of collection items, as well as restoration or preservation costs, are recorded as decreases in net assets without donor restrictions the year in which the items are acquired, or as net assets with donor restrictions if the assets used to purchase the items are restricted by donors. Contributed collection items are not reflected in the financial statements since they are excluded from recognition. Such donations need not be recognized if they are added to collections that are held for public exhibition, education, or research in furtherance of public service rather than financial gain; are protected, kept unencumbered, cared for, and preserved; and are subject to a policy that requires the proceeds from sales of collection items to be used to acquire other items for collections or provide for care of collections. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurnace recoveries are reflected as increases in the appropriate net asset classes. Collections descriptions (Part III, line 4) The purpose of the Society is the preservation and utilization of papers, documents, pictures, objects and other data and material of historical significance to Chillicothe, Ross County, and the surrounding area. The society promotes such items through activities in the community and through its museums. The organization conducts educational programs for people of all ages, saves and preserves for posterity historical artifacts and documents, and operates three museums and a library. All are open to the public. The Societys McKell Library is a research center and repository of thousands of rare books, journals, manuscripts, historical documents, and photographs. The McKell Library has over 37,000 items in its catalogue. Included are over 16,480 books and 15,000 photographs as well as manuscripts, sheet music, diaries, etc. The core of the collection consists of gifts from Colonel David McCandless McKell. In addition, many residents of Ross County have given their special books to the society. Subjects range the entire Dewey Decimal System. The 19th Century is the most represented period, but the time span extends from the 12th to the 21st century. The McKell collection consists of 15 manuscripts, 14 of them illuminated, 11 incunabula (books printed before 1501) and some 2300 other titles-primarily relating to, or written for, children. Dr. Frank Fielers catalogue of this collection was published by GK Hall in 1973. The childrens literature starts with Regime Scholariu (1488) and is especially well represented in the period from 1760 to 1820. The manuscript collection includes territorial and early statehood documents and papers of David Trimble, BF Stone, James Swearingen, Joshua Sill and others. The papers of Walter Dun (1782-1838) and of Samuel Williams (1786-1859) contain detailed pictures of life in early Ohio. Early newspapers, in print and on microfilm, are also available. The early Ohio imprints number almost two hundred.
