In each case, we meet in person with the responsible individual(s), guide and counsel them regarding possible sources of assistance, and provide direct assistance as needed. This population includes: (a) homeless individuals and families transitioning from the streets to a shelter to an apartment; (b) persons fighting substance addiction through the services of local sober houses, in many cases transitioning from detox facilities; (c) individuals recently released from prison seeking the services of our volunteer Reentry team who help them identify housing options, sometimes including an aforementioned sober house location; (d) families with breadwinners experiencing recent job loss or personal challenges, compromising their ability to pay their rent; and (e) individuals and families with severely limited financial resources facing eviction due to unpaid rent. Some of our grant funds, as well as our fundraising funds, are targeted toward this key program. 102352 0 0 Energy assistance program. We assisted 208 individuals and families with fuel or utility payments that were either overdue or upcoming for residents with no ability to pay these bills. These include fuel assistance for winter heating, as well as all forms of household utility assistance (oil, gas, electricity, water, etc.). We work with those seeking such assistance, advise them to request workable payment plans from fuel and utility companies, and when necessary guide them through the process of setting up such plans. Our assistance has very frequently prevented utility shutoffs, as well as restored heat for many living in the cold during the winter when oil tanks are empty and gas or electricity has been shut off due to lack of payment. Many of our grant funds support this important program. 80986 0 0 Food assistance program. We assisted 1,442 individuals and families with food for their daily living. Many of these individuals receive food assistance from us repeatedly throughout each year in one of two ways: (a) We very frequently deliver food to homes of those we serve. (b) In addition, we run 2 food pantries, open at scheduled times for pre-registered members of our communities to select and take home food for their families. One pantry is open once monthly, and the other is open twice weekly. Most of the pantry food is non-perishable, but we occasionally also receive produce and meat for distribution. In addition to the $80,986.00 in food purchased from treasury funds, our food assistance also included $344,530.00 in donated food. By-laws documents developed by our National Council for our organization's Conferences and Councils are posted on the National Council's website. Since our first Form 990 filing in tax year 2018 (our fiscal year 2019) after our transition to our own 501(c)(3) tax exemption, I (Mary Dwyer) have been responsible for our filing. [For the prior tax year 2017 (our fiscal year 2018) we filed a Form 990-N e-Postcard.] Each year since 2018, I have submitted an IRS Form 8868 for an automatic 6-month filing extension. I believed I had done so again this year prior to February 15, 2024. However, I discovered otherwise on Thursday, May 30, 2024, hence this late Form 990 submission. This omission on my part was due to ongoing distractions from personal family matters that have consumed my time, as well as my husband's, since last fall. From October 2023 through February 2024, my husband Tom and I have been very distracted from many of our volunteer responsibilities due to my husband's extremely ill younger sister in California. We live in Massachusetts, but we spent several weeks during that time making 2 separate trips to assist her. The first 3-week trip was to move her from a skilled nursing facility to a Board and Care facility, and also to move her belongings out of the assisted living home she lived in before being hospitalized, then discharged to the skilled nursing home. For 2-1/2 weeks in February 2024 (when the Form 8868 filing was due), we were in California arranging for Hospice care for my sister-in-law. This was a very emotionally and physically consuming time for us. I am a retiree, having had a professional career since my retirement 5-1/2 years ago. As past President and current Grants and Assistance Coordinator for our charitable organization, my time is consumed with grant application and reporting, managing and triaging our active Help Line assistance requests, maintaining our organization's website, and providing day-to-day support for members using our case management software, to name a few of my daily volunteer tasks. My negligence in not submitting our IRS Form 8868 by its due date when I thought I had done so was not at all intentional; I was horrified when I realized I had not submitted it. I will appreciate your understanding and waiver of penalties in this situation.
