The residency program at Wills Eye Hospital depends on supporting funds from the Society. The officers and other members of the Society maintain a close relationship with and provide mentor-ship to the resident doctors at the Wills Eye Hospital.The board of directors of Wills Eye Hospital is in constant communication with the officers of the Society in connection with the ophthalmology residency program.The President and Ophthalmologist-in-chief of Wills Eye Hospital, as representatives of the Board of Directors of Wills Eye Hospital attend and participate in the annual meeting of the Society. The Society's annual agenda is discussed at the annual meeting. The Society is in continuous communication with the Board of Directors of Wills Eye Hospital regarding the Society's role in supporting the residency program at Wills Eye Hospital. Part IV, Section D, Line 3: Role The Organization's Supported Orgs. Played The President and Ophthalmologist-in-Chief of Wills Eye Hospital, as representatives of the board of directors of Wills Eye Hospital, attend the annual meeting of the Society. At the annual meeting of the Society, the Fiduciary Committee of the Society and the Society's investment management professional present an annual report on the investments of the Society. The proposals for changes to the Society's investment portfolio are discussed in a plenary session of the membership of the Society, which session includes all other participants at the annual meeting of the Society. The President and the Ophthalmologist-in-Chief participate in the investment management discussion and have the opportunity to offer commentary, as representatives of Wills Eye Hospital, on the impact of the Society's investments on Wills Eye Hospital and the residency program. The Fiduciary Committee of the Society considers the recommendations of the membership and the commentary of the representatives of Wills Eye Hospital in making all financial and investment decisions. Part IV, Section E, Line 2a: Identify Supported Orgs. and Explain How Activities Furthered Exempt Pu The Society expends funds to support the ophthalmology residency program at Wills Eye Hospital. For example, the Society expends its funds to support the auditorium, equipment, and international residency program; each of which advances the educational purposes of the ophthalmology residency program at Wills Eye Hospital. The Society also sponsors an annual conference on the art and medicine of opthalmology, called the "Wills Eye Annual Conference." The conference is a three day conference designed for comprehensive ophthalmologists, specialists, and allied health personnel. The conference reviews clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to eye problems related to all ophthalmic sub-specialties. Part IV, Section E, Line 2b: Reasons For The Organization's Position Wills Eye Hospital would have to maintain and fully support a residency program for the hospital even without the support of the Society.After having held the conference for many decades, it is apparent that Wills Eye Hospital, to maintain its status as a leading national institution in ophthalmology, would independently host and sponsor the conference if the Society ceased to do so. Emeritus: An individual who was an active member by who discontinued the practice of ophthalmology because of retirement or disability.Honorary: An individual (physician or non-physician) who does not meet the criteria for active membership by who has supported or enhanced the art and practice of ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital, or served the Society in a noteworthy ancillary or supporting role.
