JDC works in partnership with local communities and collaborate to develop their capacity and infrastructure. This approach enables JDC to work with a light footprint and empower local communities - and ensures that our efforts will be sustained over the long-term.JDC strives to work with communities across Europe in different ways, depending on community needs, ability to engage, (see sched O) available funding and human resources, and the potential impact of any such engagement. Examples of this work include:1. Investing in local community camps throughout Eastern and Central Europe, all of which provide youngsters across Europe with a unique immersive camping experience, strengthen their Jewish identity and inspire them towards engagement and leadership in their own communities.2. Providing country-based and pan-European leadership training for Jewish camp counselors, young Jewish adults, community lay leaders, and Jewish community professionals across Europe.3. Working in partnership with communities to supplement their welfare services to vulnerable elderly Jews, limit gaps in funding, and ensure that communities are well trained and prepared for the future.4. Supporting Jewish Community Centers (JCCs) and Jewish schools.Our work in times of calm helps us build a solid understanding of each community and lasting ties with its leadership. This, in turn, enables us to help communities respond quickly and effectively in times of crisis be that the COVID-19 pandemic, outbreaks of antisemitism, or the influx of refugees from Ukraine. 500000 500000 Reaching the Most Vulnerable Jews - 1. JDC delivers its life-saving relief and social services to the most needy Jews - mainly elderly and poor families-- living in dire conditions in places where nearly no other social services exist. We do this through a network of JDC-founded and supported Hesed social welfare centers across the former Soviet Union, including in Ukraine, and in partnership with local Jewish communities across Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America. This global network enables us to respond to ongoing needs as well as new needs that arise due to circumstances such as the crisis in Ukraine. For the long term, we are working to leverage our existing programs, knowledge, and (see sched O) relationships so that these individuals and communities can be more self-sufficient.2. With Argentina's recession in its sixth year, hundreds of Jews across the country are struggling to weather the long period of instability. Over the past three years, the country's dire pre-existing economic situation has been aggravated by the COVID-19 crisis. Today, Argentina has one of the highest inflation rates in the world. Price hikes on basic necessities have pushed the most vulnerable individuals and families to the breaking point. Among Argentina's Jewish communities, the economic situation is most difficult in the 14 provinces outside Buenos Aires, where poverty is more widespread and small Jewish communities have little capacity to care for their neediest members. But even in Buenos Aires, a large number of formerly middle-class people have become the "new poor and now struggle to feed their families, due to pandemic-related unemployment and other financial consequences. JDC's safety net will continue to ensure vital humanitarian relief for hundreds of needy Jews in Argentina, while working with local Jewish communities toward increasing their capacity to care for their most vulnerable members. 150000 150000 Global disaster response and innovation development - transforming the horticulture sector in Ethiopia by increasing productivity, income, and livelihoods of small-scale farmers through innovative agricultural technology and a blended finance model. Sustainability of the program is ensured by the handover of knowledge to local partners and the establishment of a competitive market for Israeli technology. In 2024, TOV aims to reach 750 farmers by continuing current activities as well as diversifying partners and funders to reach more regions and farmers. Additionally, TOV aims to expand the number of Israeli technologies available to farmers, including biogas and solar pumps.The Jewish communities that JDC serves in Africa and Asia include some of the poorest and most vulnerable Jewish communities anywhere (see sched O) in the world. Often in mainly Muslim countries, like Morocco and Tunisia, these communities are physically and culturally distanced from the broader Jewish world. Compounding that, they face ongoing security, demographic, and economic challenges. Soaring inflation and unstable prices place the isolated elderly, families at risk, and people with disabilities in untenable circumstances, without the luxury of a social safety net.JDC is their local address for relief, strengthening local care efforts that sustain needy Jews with life-saving cash assistance, food, medicines, and elder care.
