The Executive Director reviews the budget annually with the board and periodically throughout the year. In some cases, staff was applying incorrect accounting principles to its accounts. Attempts to locate volunteer accounting support were unsuccessful, and paid accounting consulting services were eventually located to train staff in bookkeeping to maintain accurate records for tax filing and other purposes. The process of training staff to correct and update the books took many months. One of the necessary tasks was to prepare and file an amended long-form 990 to make a modest prior period adjustment for 2019 and correct other errors in the initial Form 990EZ filing. Staff filed extension requests during tax years 2021 and 2022 but was unable to complete the task of updating and restating the organization's financial documents for purposes of filing the amended 2020 and initial 2021 and 2022 forms until now. We request an abatement of the penalty for late filing under the circumstances.
