Founded in 2015, we achieve this by providing accessible resources -- tools and teachers and programs -- in a collaborative environment. We are a community-run, community-benefiting organization enriching lives with professional and recreational education programs for adults and youth. The Truckee Roundhouse Community Makerspace actualizes our mission in our 4,600-square-foot renovated hangar at Truckee Tahoe Airport, where we have five shops -- Wood, Metal, Textiles, Ceramics, and Technology -- equipped with high-quality and cutting-edge tools. We offer a safe and welcoming space where professionals and experienced users work alongside members and students. There are four ways for the public to engage with us:- As self-directed members who work independently or in collaboration with others;- Taking a group class or workshop that teaches tool usage and inspires creativity;- Participating in our Education and Community Enrichment Program;- Attending one of our FREE public making events.At the end of 2023, our membership totaled 303 persons ranging in age from 8 to 82. We serve hundreds more through our Education and Community Enrichment Program.Our successes for 2023 included:We continued to improve our operations and capacity to serve our community through our Curriculum Development project. We expanded our program reach by 65% over the prior year, with more than 1,900 public class attendees. We continue to see the impact of of our investment in our curriculum development through the stability of the organization, financially and programmatically. Our more robust public class and workshop schedule has not only increased our earned revenue with classes selling out as soon as we can schedule them, but it has also fueled growth in memberships as folks become skilled enough after taking classes to use tools in their own self-directed learning and projects.We continued to serve our region through our Education and Community Enrichment program. 2023 was an extremely successful year for this program, as we hosted previous partners and welcomed new partners to the space in a full season of exciting programming. They included:- Aim High Summer Program- Alder Creek Middle School GATE program- Keep Truckee Green (Town of Truckee)- Martis Camp Kids Summer Camp Day at the Makerspace- Sierra High Continuation School- Sierra Watershed Education Partnership (SWEP)- St. Clares Montessori Middle School program from Incline Village- Tahoe Expedition Academy (TEA) Middle School students- Tahoe Expedition Academy (TEA) High School students- Tahoe Ability Program (TAP)- Truckee River SchoolThere were a total of 419 student visits in workshops offered through our Education and Community Enrichment program. We advanced our goal to improve accessibility and outreach to underserved communities. We continued our Summer Enrichment Kids Camps, which brings students ages 8 - 11 to the makerspace for a week of Ceramics, Sewing, and Upcycled projects. We awarded full scholarships to 12% of campers, some of whom had never attended a summer camp of any kind due to their financial limitations.Maker-in-Residence Program. We announced our Maker-in-Residence Program for two high school students participating in our Education and Community Enrichment programs for the 2023- 24 academic year. This program provides mentoring and vocational exposure.Volunteer Hours ContributedThe Roundhouse is a safe, clean, welcoming space thanks to our team of 42 skilled and dedicated volunteers who embody a true community spirit. Each commits at least four hours per week, whether staffing the front desk, serving as shop leaders and assistants, participating in shop clean-ups, working our annual Maker Show fundraiser, or providing professional services such as the construction of storage and shelving, electrical work, and CPR and first-aid training. Members of our Board of Directors, a broad cross-section of the community, devote an average of four hours a week to monthly board meetings, community outreach, relationship building, committee service, and pro bono professional services.
