The IRS provided a fillable 990 for our fiscal year 2022 and we thought it would be fine to use a form provided by the IRS for its clear intended purpose. We filed that paper return on time. Also the IRS did not provide enough time for us to respond to the notice (Letter 2694C) saying we had just 10 days to efile. The notice was dated 6/13/2024, a Thursday. We did not receive it until the following Tuesday (afternoon), 3 business days later. The next day was a holiday, leaving us just 2 business days to file. It takes almost a whole day to transfer all that data into forms online and make sure we don't have any typos. We are a small nonprofit organization (just one part-time administrative staff person). We recently downsized and we don't do any administration unless it is essential to the survival of the organization. Our administrator has worked overtime this week to get this done, but it wasn't possible to do it in 2 business days. Then, once we had completed the form, we had to wait for our consulting accountant to review our assumptions (which finally happened yesterday) before submitting the form today.
