Fellowship: One of the core missions of SJLF is our fellowship program. SJLFs fellowship program provides 2-year fellowships to recent law school graduates to dedicate themselves to the fight for civil rights. In September and October 2021, we welcomed five new fellows to our inaugural cohort. We were able to cover their moving expenses and bar fees. Our staff including SJLFs executive director, staff attorneys, and fellows conducted extensive community outreach meetings with grassroots organizations and other advocates to learn about systemic issues in need of attention. Based on this outreach, we developed investigations related to the injustices of the carceral system, including police misconduct. We have provided our fellows with hands-on legal training in building and litigating civil rights cases.2. The other pillar of our organization is in developing precedent-setting litigation to advance social justice. As discussed above, SJLF attorneys conducted extensive outreach and married that with legal and factual research to develop case leads. In our first year, we were able to partner with ACLU of Louisianas project Justice Lab to fight police misconduct in Louisiana. SJLF took on seven investigations to identify if claims could be brought to litigation.
