Part XII Response or note to any line in Part XII The City of Corvallis Parks and Recrecation Department has a Services Contract with Corvallis Environmental Center to manage the three acres of Dunawi Creek Community Gardens including SAGE. The City provides the land at no cost and CEC provides community garden services and environmental education programs. This agreement is currently valid through 2023 and can be extended two additional years. General explanation attachment The Corvallis Environmental Center (CEC) is a community-based, educational non-profit that has prioritized partnerships to implement programs to address community needs since 1994. CECs mission is to create a healthy, sustainable community. We do this through pre-K to 8th environmental education, Farm to School programs, youth leadership development, teacher training, and food security. CECs programs include after school programs, summer camps, a nature-based preschool in Avery Park, classroom education in partnership with the Corvallis and Philomath School Districts, family programs and events, and a 1-acre demonstration and education garden in Starker Arts Park known as SAGE. The food grown at SAGE is donated to social service partner agencies through the Food for Families program. First Accomplishment - Nature EducationCEC offers a variety of opportunities throughout the year for pre-K through 8th grade youth to experience place-based environmental education. Child-centered learning practices are designed to meet state and national education standards while building connections with nature and among students.Programs include NaturePlay preschool, Nature School for homeschoolers, Junior Naturalists, WILD Afterschool, Schools Out Adventures, summer camps, community events, and family activities. With a focus on nature-based content, we include math, reading, science, culture, and the arts in order to create a well-rounded experience. During 2022 our program delivery included an increase of in-person education compared to the prior year. We continued offering our own NaturePlay preschool morning session and a bilingual afternoon session. Camps offered in the summer months as a week-long outdoor learning adventures for children ages 3-12.CECs Nature Education programs increase environmental literacy and a sense of stewardship within the next generation of leaders. Second Accomplishment - Farm to SchoolThe Corvallis Farm to School Program works to increase childrens access to and consumption of fruits and vegetables, healthy grains, and legumes while teaching about good nutrition and encouraging healthy food choices. It integrates food and nutrition programming into Corvallis, Albany, and Philomath District Schools with activities that engage children in growing, preparing, and eating fresh, local, and healthy foods. The program supports outdoor and place-based learning goals by utilizing school gardens for broad-based curriculum. Program activities are held in the classroom, cafeteria, school gardens, and in the community. In 2022 in-person school-based programs resumed and we expanded our Farm to School programming to Albany. We also offered outdoor garden adventures, providing day camp programming for students to augment home learning as well as on no-school days. Camps offered in the summer months as week-long, garden-themed outdoor learning adventures for children ages 3 - 12. Third Accomplishment - Food for FamiliesThe Corvallis Environmental Centers Food for Families Program helps alleviate hunger and food insecurity in Corvallis by filling gaps in the local emergency food system. The goal of the Food for Families Program is to improve the health of vulnerable populations in Covallis and increase their food self-sufficiency while simultaneously engaging and educating community members in sustainable agricultural production practices.The program provides fresh produce year round to partner emergency food distribution centers, shelters, and social service agencies in Corvallis who distribute our fresh vegetables to individuals and families in need. In 2022, we donated over 5,378 pounds of 57 different varieties of fresh produce which was harvested from the garden and delivered fresh to the local food pantries and social service agencies we partner with for distribution to their clientele.Staff, interns, and community volunteers work year-round to plan, plant, maintain, and harvest fruits and vegetables on our 1-acre production, demonstration, and education garden located in Bruce Starker Arts Park. Staff work with businesses to source plant seeds and starts, compost, and equipment as well to plan work parties for interested companies as part of their volunteer service. In 2022, 370 volunteers and 17 interns dedicated over 1,272 and 1,103 hours respectively to this program.
