Expenses of $340,801 including grants of $326,622 Grassroots Law Project built on our 2021 campaign to free Marvin Guy - a Black man who has been in jail for eight years without a trial - charged with capital murder in a case where the police executed a senseless no-knock police raid that endangered everyone involved in the early morning hours and gun fire ensued. GLP paid and has continued to pay for a legal team and experts to fight for his freedom, and mobilized local activists to build momentum on the ground. In 2022, this legal team was able to get the death penalty dropped for Marvin and also secured a trial date for 2023. We also organized local events in Texas, including a peaceful prayer vigil in Austin in May, and helped mobilize a coalition of local activists who are continuing the fight on the ground. GLP paid $326,622 in legal fees in 2022 and also spent $14,179 in other support, including on-the-ground events, phone calls, texting, digital ads, and printing costs. B. Expenses of $295,562 including grants of $48,750 Victims of police violence, and their families, receive little to no support from the legal system. This funding helped families bridge the financial gap left by a lost loved one and pay for funeral expenses. It also helped launch and staff public pressure campaigns on officials who could hold those that caused harm accountable, and fund nonprofit organizations run by or working for families of victims of violence. GLP successfully advocated for victims of police violence including securing charges for the officers who killed Patrick Lyoya in Grand Rapids, Michigan and 8 year-old Fanta Bility in Sharon Hill, PA. GLP also continued working with Ashley and Michelle Monterrosa to demand police reform in Vallejo and accountability for the officer who killed their brother Sean. Additionally GLP helped sponsor a retreat organized by Mike Brown Sr. for fathers who've lost children to police violence. Together, our supporters helped raise $34,261 to cover housing, airfare, food, and more to make the event a success. C. Expenses of $235,000 including grants of $0 Grassroots Law Project mobilized supporters to confront white supremacy and amplify the voices of victims of injustice. Examples of large scale campaigns include launching a project to confront white supremacy -#TheGreatestThreat to our safety and security in America - in response to the horrific white supremacist terrorist attack in a supermarket in Buffalo, and responding to the crisis of evacuating and housing Black and brown international students as war broke out in Ukraine by advocating for Temporary Protected Status for Cameroon. Other examples of GLP work responding to crises in the criminal legal system with a combination of citizen engagement, policy research and legislative action include Kastellio Vaughan who was left to die in an Alabama prison after a botched surgery. GLP mobilized supporters to make 6,000+ phone calls to 29 decision-makers shining a light on this issue and demanding emergency medical treatment. It also includes when GLP identified 100+ local and state decision-makers and mobilized supporters to deliver tens of thousands of petition messages to get Jessica Miles back into her home on the West Los Angeles VA campus. D. EXPENSES OF $1,912,115 including grants of $0 TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN GRASSROOTS ORGANIZING AND LEGAL EXPERTISE TO REFORM THE AMERICAN JUSTICE SYSTEM. PART VI, LINE 8B: THE ORGANIZATION DOES NOT HAVE ANY COMMITTEES WITH AUTHORITY TO ACT ON BEHALF OF THE GOVERNING BODY.
