In April, our efforts prompted San Marcos to become the first and only city in Texas to enact a Cite & Release Ordinance, which uses the force of law to prohibit police from arresting residents for multiple low-level offenses -- such as traffic infractions, marijuana possession, petty theft, etc -- and obligates them to issues citations instead. Alongside The Bail Project, in the spring we launched a revolving community bail fund, posting bonds for individuals who would be home awaiting their court date, not in jail, if only they could afford the $10,000-or-less price tag for pretrial freedom.
