Each affiliated organization is represented by a designated member on the WBO's Advisory Board. In turn the Advisory Board monitors the activities of the WBO and is engaged with the Executive Team. 21309 0 0 The WBO initiated a non-residential research fellows program as the first step in establishing a policy think tank on Brazil in Washington D.C. We invited eleven scholars who already had connections with the WBO to join this project. The research fellows met monthly to discuss the political situation in Brazil and contributed articles to the weekly WBO Bulletin on the elections. 17200 0 0 In July 2022 a communications coordinator was hired. In the second half of the year the result was the multiplication of mentions of the WBO in the Brazilian and foreign press. There was also an increase in the number of WBO followers on social networks visitors to the organization's website interviews given by its directors and publication of opinion articles in major newspapers. The WBO now has a mailing list of 182 Brazilian and foreign journalists. In March the office organized a congressional briefing to discuss the scenario around the upcoming presidential election. This briefing included the presence of Denise Dora Article 19 Maria Hermínia Tavares Arns Commission Pedro Kelson Pacto pela Democracia and Alberto Cantalice Fundacao Perseu Abramo. Later in the first half of the year the WBO also organized a briefing on labor issues hosted by the office of Rep. Susan Wild. In this briefing the speakers were Brazilian Congresswoman Erika Kokay former Governor Tarso Genro and labor lawyer Stanley Gacek. Representatives from approximately 40 Congressional offices attended this briefing. During the second half of 2022 most of the WBO's activities with the U.S. Congress focused on the defense of the Brazilian elections and the democratic process. The Office organized several bilateral meetings with different offices in the House and the Senate to raise awareness about the anti-democratic threats that Brazil faced. The WBO also organized Congressional briefings in which experts on Brazilian history and politics participated. In one of these briefings Senator Sanders provided opening remarks. After intense efforts to educate and alert the U.S. Congress about the political situation in Brazil U.S. legislators manifested their support for democracy in Brazil and against any possible coup d'état by the Brazilian armed forces should the election outcome not favor President Bolsonaro. A few weeks after meeting with the delegation of Brazilian civil society organizations Senator Sanders announced that he would present a resolution in the U.S. Senate in defense of democracy and respect for the Brazilian electoral process. The resolution also urged the U.S. government to cut ties with Brazil in case Bolsonaro didn't accept the results of the election. The text which was introduced by Senator Tim Kaine the Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere and Senator Bernie Sanders also had the support of Senators Jeff Merkley Richard Blumenthal Patrick Leahy and Elizabeth Warren. A few weeks after its introduction the resolution was unanimously approved. Throughout this process the WBO worked closely with Senator Sanders team to ensure that the resolution passed. On September 9 after another initiative promoted by the WBO a group of 39 congressional members sent a letter to President Biden asking him to make unequivocally clear to [Brazilian President Jair] Bolsonaro his government and security forces that Brazil will find itself isolated from the U.S. and the international community of democracies if there are attempts to subvert the country's electoral process. Senator Leahy president pro tempore of the U.S. Senate led the letter which was also signed by Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Menendez and a number of other senators. House members including House Foreign Affairs Chairman Gregory Meeks and Rep. Albio Sires Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere also signed the letter. This was the first time in recent years that a bicameral letter concerning Brazil was sent from the U.S. Congress to the White House.
